In comments sent to U.S. Army Engineer District Commander Col. Michael R. Morrow, the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) fully supports the Upper Mississippi River Comprehensive Plan Flood Control Plan G, which may make system-wide protection available and achievable.
“Among the 12 options that were studied, Plan G offers the greatest protection to the greatest number of communities and residents in the Mississippi River Valley,” NCGA President Gerald Tumbleson said in the comments. “It calls for 500-year flood protection for urban and agricultural areas and 500-year ring levees with no new development for unprotected towns. The greatest benefit to implementing this plan is the protection of human life.”
Tumbleson also noted this protection would benefit producers, taxpayers, consumers and other businesses that rely on the river to get their goods to and from the customer.
“The devastation which resulted from last year’s hurricanes is still fresh on our minds, but the devastation resulting from the 1993 flood is a not-too-distant memory,” Tumbleson said. “Corn growers recognize that we must defend our citizens and our economy from these catastrophes.”
