NCGA Campaign for WRDA Moves into High Gear (11-9-06)

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) urges its state-affiliated organizations and nearly 33,000 corn grower members to target every Senate and House office during the “WRDA Call-In” campaign the week of Nov. 13 in order to secure passage of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA).
The effort to pass WRDA legislation, which includes authorization for construction of seven 1,200 foot locks on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers, starts today with an ad campaign. NCGA joined a diverse coalition of more than 300 organizations to launch the first of two full-page ads that will run in the Capitol Hill newspaper, Roll Call. The ad will also run Nov. 13.
“It’s game time for corn growers, and we are ramping up the effort to get WRDA passed,” said McCauley. “There is simply no reason for Congress to delay this legislation any further. With the mid-term elections behind us, it is now time to pass this long-overdue, bipartisan legislation.”
McCauley pointed out that WRDA, which also includes one of the largest and most extensive ecosystem restoration efforts, is not just about agriculture.
“This bill extends far beyond agriculture,” McCauley said. “This bill is about jobs, the cost of importing goods and the shipping of other commodities such as coal, steel, and construction materials. Everyone is impacted by inefficient transportation infrastructure from the producer to the shipper to the consumer.”
To let Congress know you want WRDA passed now, call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to call your senator or representative.
