NCGA Encourages Corn Growers to Discuss Ag Issues with Candidates(10-16-06)

As the final weeks of the campaign season wind down, the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) encourages its growers to discuss agriculture policy with local candidates.

“With mid-term elections right around the corner, it is the perfect time for growers to ask questions and evaluate all of the candidates,” said Ken McCauley, NCGA president. “This election will have significant importance to corn growers and our issues, including farm policy. This election could change the entire makeup of the next Congress, which will begin developing farm program policy.”

On Nov. 7, every member of the House of Representatives and 33 senators are up for re-election.
“Members of Congress are traveling across their districts and states seeking votes,” McCauley said. “That means good things for corn growers who can connect on a personal level with their local lawmakers and talk about the policies that will benefit farmers’ livelihoods, in addition to advocating policies that will continue to provide benefits to rural America.”

“Growers interested in the future of public policies that benefit the agriculture industry have a big stake in the November elections,” said Jon Doggett, NCGA vice president of public policy. “The 110th Congress will write the next farm bill and will have enormous say in trade agreements, as well as implementing regulations and programs impacting corn growers.”

Doggett offered a piece of advice to the grassroots: “Know the issue and let your legislator know the issue and how it will affect your vote and your bottom line.”
