Central Indiana Tour Offers Inside Look at Conservation on the Farm (6-11-08)
A tour of several farms in Central Indiana will offer visitors a close-up view of conservation practices in modern agriculture, courtesy the Conservation Technology Information Center (CTIC). The tour is set for July 17, with registration required by June 27.
With Indianapolis as a starting point, the tour will visit farms in Brownsburg, Lebanon, Frankfort and Arcadia, with a stop also at a seed company in Atlanta. In addition to reduced or no tillage, the farms have employed other conservation practices such as using cover crops, reducing water use and managing drainage.
The National Corn Growers Association is a member of CTIC, a national, public-private partnership that envisions agriculture using environmentally beneficial and economically viable natural resource systems.
“The conservation of our land and water resources is very important to corn growers,” said David Ward, chairman of NCGA’s Production and Stewardship Action Team and a grower from Mapleton, Minn. “The Conservation Technology Information Center provides growers the means to work together and share best practices, and this tour provides a detailed look at how these practices are successfully implemented on the farm.”
