NASS Releases Crop Progress Report (6-24-08)
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) crop progress report released yesterday shows a three percent increase of corn in excellent condition and a two percent increase of corn in good to excellent condition. Jacqueline Taylor and Laura Linden, of the National Corn Growers Association’s Washington, D.C., office, distributed information Thursday and Friday at a BioEnergy Awareness Days event held on the National Mall in Washington. More than 55 organizations, colleges and universities participated in the event. The goal of the event is to help raise awareness and knowledge of the sustainable production of agriculture, renewable energy and energy conservation. NCGA was an event sponsor of the event, presented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the 25’ x 25 Alliance.

Daryl Haack, of Primghar, Iowa, is running for re-election to the NCGA Corn Board, and currently serves as its liaison to the NCGA Biotechnology Working Group. NCGA Corn Board Selects South Dakota’s Darrin Ihnen as Next First Vice President (6-18-08)
The National Corn Growers Association Corn Board on Wednesday elected Darrin Ihnen of Hurley, S.D., to the position of first vice president for the 2009 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.
Ihnen and his family operate a farm growing irrigated and dry-land corn and soybeans. They also raise stock cows and manage a contract hog-feeding operation. Ihnen has been involved in corn-grower issues at local, state and national levels participating in NCGA’s Leadership Academy, South Dakota Corn Growers Association and NCGA’s Biotechnology Working Group and Production and Stewardship Action Team. NCGA at Symposium on Biofuels Issues (6-9-08)
National Corn Growers Association’s Emily Olson, director of public policy, participated in the American Agri-Women Agricultural Issues Symposium Monday entitled, “Who’s Feeding the Hysteria? Finding the Sensible in Sensationalized Issues.” During the panel, Olson stated that ethanol has saved consumers money at the pump and reiterated that relaxing the renewable fuels standard mandate is not going to lower corn prices dramatically. Noting how rising input costs have impacted farming operations, Olson commented that speculators and index funds have a significant impact on the prices we see in the marketplace. AAW is the nation’s largest coalition of farm, ranch and agribusiness women, with 50 state, commodity, agribusiness affiliate organizations and collegiate chapters throughout the country. Members of Congress Ask EPA to Protect Renewable Fuels Standard (6-9-08)
A bipartisan group of 32 lawmakers led by Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.) and Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.) have asked the EPA to preserve the renewable fuels standard (RFS) enacted in last year’s Energy Bill by refusing to grant any requests to waive or halt the RFS. (More On This Story)
