Today, nearly every gallon of gasoline in the U.S. contains a minimum of 10% ethanol derived from corn.
U.S. corn farmers believe so strongly in the case for higher blends of ethanol, because of corn ethanol’s ability to improve engine performance and reduce environmental impacts, all at a lower cost to consumers. Corn farmers work tirelessly to ensure consumers have a future choice at the fuel pump that delivers all the benefits possible through fuels blended with higher volumes of ethanol.
Whether it’s backing the market access provided by the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) or expanding the marketplace with higher blends of ethanol, like E15, the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) is working for America’s corn farmers to increase ethanol use.
Each year, roughly 30% of field corn goes into fuel ethanol. Ethanol is the second-largest customer for U.S. corn. Corn ethanol is uniquely positioned to play a larger role in the future of transportation fuels.
The ethanol industry has had a substantial impact on the economic vitality of rural communities, especially in America’s heartland, where the majority of the nation’s corn ethanol plants are located. Short transportation distances and local investment have led to most ethanol facilities being centrally located in the United States, providing more economic independence and energy security to our country while supporting local jobs.
Ethanol production is a domestic energy industry, creating jobs and economic vitality all across America—especially in rural areas of the nation.
-
In 2019, the U.S. ethanol industry helped support nearly 349,000 direct and indirect jobs.
-
Ethanol contributed more than $43 billion to the Gross Domestic Product and added $23.3 billion to household income.
-
This generated more than $10 billion in tax revenue for federal, state and local governments.
To unlock improved performance in future auto engines, automakers will require consumer access to higher octane fuels at retail gas stations. Corn farmers, just like all Americans, want access to the lowest cost, most efficient, environmentally friendly, and safe motor fuels available. Corn ethanol is uniquely positioned as it is the only option that checks all of these boxes today. Ethanol is a commercially available, high-octane, low-carbon, affordable source of octane that stands ready to reliably supply the U.S. motor fuel market with a homegrown fuel. Studies have shown that in order to optimize the performance of future engines, a high-octane fuel could utilize between 20%-40% ethanol compared to the 10%-15% blends standard across the U.S. today. The move to higher octane fuels will not occur overnight, but it is NCGA’s stance that we must move quickly to plant the seeds for future ethanol demand that will positively impact farmers for decades to come.
